The mission of AIA is to be the voice of the architecture profession dedicated to three purposes: serving its members, advancing their value, and improving the quality of the built environment.

GENERAL //

AIA Milwaukee is the largest chapter of AIA Wisconsin, representing over 700 architects and emerging professionals in southeastern Wisconsin. The organization exists to serve the needs of its members within the Greater Milwaukee region, and to provide leadership and stewardship to the public–at–large for a range of issues affecting the built environment.

Members of AIA Milwaukee have available to them a range of continuing education, volunteer and other professional opportunities. Participation within the organization is open at many levels, including membership for registered professionals, associate members, and sponsorship opportunities for the many allied suppliers, manufacturers, and service providers to the profession.

ORGANIZATION //

AIA Milwaukee is lead by an Executive Board– President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Past President and three directors at large. These eight directors are the voting delegates for the chapter.

BACKGROUND //

AIA Milwaukee has a rich history of involvement in community design and social issues and today utilizes a volunteer committee structure to focus on areas of concern for our region, including sustainable (or “green”) design practices, community outreach, design education and the development of emerging professionals. In providing these opportunities for involvement, the presentation of a diverse and dedicated AIA Milwaukee emphasizes the role of architects as advocates for a stronger community.

GOALS //

1. Organizing and uniting in fellowship with members of the architectural profession within the Greater Milwaukee Area.

2. Promoting the aesthetic, scientific and practical efficiency of the architectural profession.

3. Advancing the science and art of planning and building by advancing the standard of architectural education, training and practice.

4. Coordinating the profession of architecture with the building industry to insure the advancement of the living standard of people through their improved environment.

5. Working to insure the architectural profession is of ever-increasing value to society.

6. Protecting the rights and interests of our members and advocating on their behalf.

ANNUAL REPORT // 2008

E-mail Print PDF

(APRIL 25, 2009) The year began with cautious optimism and ended in economic turmoil. It was a year of deserved promotions but also of involuntary departures.  Some of our projects evaporated or were put on hold, but we can celebrate the work of two of our members landing on the cover of the September "Architectural Record." (Brian Johnson, AIA and Sebastian Schmaling, AIA - Downtown Bar, aka Cafe Luna).  Another member's project graced the cover of Milwaukee's November "Exclusively Yours' (Michael Brush, AIA - 6th Street Viaduct).

AIA National COTE Top Ten recognized Tom Kubala, AIA and Allen Washatko, AIA, for their LEED platinum Aldo Leopold Center.  New member Elizabeth "Zibby" Ericson, FAIA, received a "woman in design" award from the Boston Society of Architects.  AIA Milwaukee continues to thrive, inspiring your creativity, jolting your intellect, sparking advocacy, energizing young professionals and bring cohesion to the design community. We focused on communication and collaboration this past year, providing our members unique program opportunities.

I sincerely thank the 2008 AIA Milwaukee Board of Directors and all those who shared their wisdom, opened their companies’ doors to our group, and supported our programs.  Despite the profession’s volatility it has truly been an honor to have had the opportunity to lead the AIA Milwaukee Chapter as the 2008 President.
