Such programs developed by this committee include: Community Awards, “Architects Roll-Up Their Sleeves” – Blood Drive, Feed Your Soul, Architects on Wheels. At least one program a year is also developed to cultural and international diversity amongst the profession. You can find out more information about these programs and many more under Programs.

Another part of the Community Committee is to work hand-in-hand with the AIA Milwaukee 150 initiative, Reweaving the Neighborhood Fabric.

Lego Robotics Program

E-mail Print PDF

AIA Milwaukee is teaming up with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee to encourage inner city youngsters to pursue careers in architecture and building professions.

Led by Erik Hancock, Associate AIA and John Holz, AIA, ten fifth- through eighth-graders attending the Mary Ryan Center are learning about building design and construction while they develop a Lego Robotics Program for their annual Mind-Storm tournament.

The two initiatives go well together, and that was the point.  Erik and John were invited by Erin Hareng and Shannon Roundtree of the Boys and Girls Clubs to develop an interactive curriculum that could foster creativity, teamwork, and communication skills as the students prepare for the tournament.  After several visits to the Mary Ryan Center, Erik and John suggested a field trip to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning where the youngsters could experience a collaborative and creative environment up close and personal.  And did their eyes lit up!  The Lego team toured the school and attended a design critique in action, and finished with a presentation by Professor Christopher Ludwig and students Paul Wellington, Sam DeWall, Jacob Cournoyer, Leif Williamson, Elizabeth Tanner and Pete Trio.  They didn’t want to leave!  Each of the Lego Robotic Team-members was engaged with their new student mentors, their exciting work, and their fascinating software programs.  The youngsters were gathered around SketchUp software tutorials by Paul and Elizabeth, learning how to make architectural shapes and compositions.

Next stop for these Lego brainiacs is a construction tour of St. John’s Tower on the Lake hosted by VJS Construction Services in December, but not before their big Lego competition on November 20th.  AIA Milwaukee would be delighted if other members were interested in teaming up with the Boys and Girls Clubs, and Erin Hareng would be happy to make the connection with architects and any of the forty Clubs located throughout the Milwaukee Area.  Many participate in the Lego program, and would benefit from learning about architecture.  There are other ways to help, too.  Through Boys & Girls Clubs’ virtual toy drive, you can purchase toys that will be given to youth in Milwaukee who might not otherwise receive a gift this holiday season. Visit www.boysgirlsclubs.org/virtualtoydrive.aspx. All participants will be entered in a drawing to win a Bucks suite and meet Brandon Jennings!
