Lego Robotics Program

E-mail Print PDF

AIA Milwaukee is teaming up with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee to encourage inner city youngsters to pursue careers in architecture and building professions.

Led by Erik Hancock, Associate AIA and John Holz, AIA, ten fifth- through eighth-graders attending the Mary Ryan Center are learning about building design and construction while they develop a Lego Robotics Program for their annual Mind-Storm tournament.

The two initiatives go well together, and that was the point.  Erik and John were invited by Erin Hareng and Shannon Roundtree of the Boys and Girls Clubs to develop an interactive curriculum that could foster creativity, teamwork, and communication skills as the students prepare for the tournament.  After several visits to the Mary Ryan Center, Erik and John suggested a field trip to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee’s School of Architecture and Urban Planning where the youngsters could experience a collaborative and creative environment up close and personal.  And did their eyes lit up!  The Lego team toured the school and attended a design critique in action, and finished with a presentation by Professor Christopher Ludwig and students Paul Wellington, Sam DeWall, Jacob Cournoyer, Leif Williamson, Elizabeth Tanner and Pete Trio.  They didn’t want to leave!  Each of the Lego Robotic Team-members was engaged with their new student mentors, their exciting work, and their fascinating software programs.  The youngsters were gathered around SketchUp software tutorials by Paul and Elizabeth, learning how to make architectural shapes and compositions. GEORGESON named curator of US Architectural Exhibit in Prague

(APRIL 25, 2009) Scott has been appointed as the Exhibit Curator for the United States Architectural Exhibit to the 2011 Prague Quadrennial.  (PQ 2011)   Held in Prague every four years, the PQ is one of the world's most prestigious competitive theatre art and theatre architecture exhibitions. The PQ provides a global gathering ground for performance designers and other professionals to meet those who make theatre spaces strengthening the dialogue between architecture, design and performance practices.

The exhibit will showcase the achievements in American theatre design.  For PQ 2011 the Architecture exhibit will answer the question. "What is a theatre here (of a particular place) and now (of a particular time)”?  The focus will be on performance spaces that have been constructed (purpose built venue), performed (improvised in a found space) or imagined (unbuilt or virtual world) in this new century.

Scott is currently creating a PQ 2011 architecture committee to over see the design of the exhibit and selection of the projects to be exhibited.  The final concept and selection of the theatre projects to be exhibited will take place in Fall of 2009.   An additional goal for the PQ 2011 Architectural exhibit is to come back to the United States and exhibit at selected institutions.

AIA Wisconsin also recognized ten design projects with the 2008 Design Awards program, 9 of which were awarded to Milwaukee firms. Congratulations to Johnsen Schmaling, HGA, La Dallman, Plunkett Raysich Architects, Vetter Denk and Flad Architects of Madison.

2008 National COTE design award to TKWA

(April 2008) Congratulations to The Kubala Washatko Architects of Cederburg, Wisconsin (TKWA) for its National award winning design of the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center in Baraboo, Wisconsin.

“Through its demonstrable energy conservation and reduced heating, cooling and operating costs, this is an excellent example of how a building can achieve carbon neutrality.” stated juror and AIA national First Vice President, Marvin Malecha, FAIA

“Completed in spring, 2007, the 12,000sf building includes office and meeting spaces, interpretive hall, archive and workshop. The Center was envisioned as a small complex of structures organized around a central courtyard. This design provides flexibility in managing energy use based on program requirements, creates outdoor spaces for work and gathering, and reduces the scale of the buildings on site. The Aldo Leopold Legacy Center is the first building recognized by LEED as carbon-neutral in operation”.   TKWA co-founders  Allen Washatko and Tom Kubala will be traveling to the AIA national convention in Boston to receive their award.  An AIAM Opening Doors program at TKWA in Cedarburg is planned for Fall 2008.

AIAS Chapter Formed at MIAD

(October 2008) Architecture Students at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design [MIAD] have formed an American Institute of Architecture Students [AIAS] chapter. Last year at AIAS FORUM 2007, the national architecture student convention hosted by the AIAS Chapter at UWM, MIAD Students Danielle Jones and Annabelle Luedtke were awarded first place in the 2007 AIAS/Vinyl Institute Design Competition. With their top design MIAD was provided a scholarship to start their own AIAS chapter.

FREEDOM FUNDRAISER

UWM AIAS Freedom by Design is currently fundraising for their upcoming design/build project. The money raised will go towards their next project for a family in Oak Creek, Sharon and her grandson, Austin. Their ultimate fundraising goal for this project is $15,000. Their client, 12-year-old Austin, is quadriplegic, hypothermic, and blind. He is confined to a wheelchair and makes frequent trips to the hospital with his grandmother for emergency procedures. Their goal for this family is to build an ADA accessible three season room, enclosed ramp and attached garage.  These additions will not only keep Austin safe from the harsh Wisconsin weather on his way to their van, but will also allow Austin to experience the sounds of the outdoors for the first time.

A New Way to Build Up in Downtown Milwaukee

Recap of Staybridge Suites + Residences on Water Construction Tour – R. Morrison

(April 2008) The weather didn’t completely cooperate, but the 30 hearty guests that fought through the pouring rain and gusting winter winds enjoyed a look at the future of precast construction.  Roger Becker, PE, Vice President of Spancrete and several other representatives from Spancrete and Economou Partners lead the tour, demonstrating new precast construction techniques, and answering many questions from the contractors, students, and architects in attendance.

The project features a new type of precast truss which spans 2-stories in height, 75’ in clear span length, and installed at 30’ on center.  Theses trusses are set on columns at every other floor.  At the initial floor the floor deck above is supported by the bottom chord of the truss and the next floor deck is set on top of the truss.  By doing so, the initial floor has no interior columns throughout and allows maximum flexibility in space planning design.

The upper level has the trusses spanning in one direction, but no other obstructions, like columns, in the space.  The trusses currently limited to highway transportation on trucking limitations, which accommodates 14’ tall trusses at 75’ length.  The project also features a variety of precast exterior panels, floor deck, beams, columns, and structural tee-systems.

444 Chairs designed by UWM Students

(February 2008) Bar stools, lounge chairs, and seats of all colors and designs were on exhibit at the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning over the past few months. 444 architecture and design students showcased their drawings and models. Architecture faculty, staff and the competition sponsors select the top chair designs. The winning chair design was submitted to Nemschoff, a Sheboygan-based manufacturer of furniture to build the full size chair.

AIA Milwaukee, a supporter of this event congratulates this year's student winner, Jonathan Mark Koskie.

Green Architecture at its Robust Best

(February 2008) Over 40 people were in attendance as The Kubala Washatko Architects presented a post-construction tour of their project, the new Alterra Coffee Roasters on Humboldt Avenue in Milwaukee, WI.

Opening Doors to Education

(January 2008) AIA Milwaukee visited the newly created SUPAR (School for Urban Planning and Architecture) an MPS Charter High School. To support their mission AIA Milwaukee donated $500 to the school. This event was just one of many FREE Opening Doors programs AIA Milwaukee hosts bi-monthly that are open to all members and the public.

In Memory, Cherie K. Claussen, AIA | March 28, 1954 - August 7, 2009

Cherie K. Claussen, AIA of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin passed away on Aug. 7, 2009 after a lengthy illness. Those who knew her would know she would never acknowledge that she lost a four year battle against cancer, but instead would say of Cherie, that it was her nature to dictate her own terms with the disease, fight willfully and valiantly, and demonstrate a remarkable will to live to the end.

Cherie was a tireless advocate for designing healthcare facilities that improved people's lives. "I have always loved architecture, particularly healthcare, because you help people," she once said. "Healthcare architects have a positive effect on a lot of people by enabling them to get better. A successful healthcare facility helps increase communication between staff and administrator and encourages people to perform better, communicate better, and work more productively because of stronger, more efficient design. Of course, I'm always happy when the building looks good, too."

Her commitment for good design motivated her work style at HGA Architects and Engineers in Milwaukee, where she was a healthcare principal and medical planner serving in numerous leadership roles, including office director. Cherie became interested in architecture early on.

She was raised in Chicago, graduating from Morgan Park High School in 1972 as a National Honor Society member. After attending the University of Colorado-Boulder for a year, she transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning, where she earned a Master of Architecture in 1977. As one of only three women in a class of 150, she excelled as a future design leader, receiving the Henry Adams Medal for Excellence in the study of Architecture from The American Institute of Architects in 1977.

After passing her architectural registration exam in 1978, Cherie practiced architecture in Milwaukee for 10 years before joining HGA in 1989 as one of six original members of the national design firm's Milwaukee office. Today, HGA is one of the largest architecture firms in Milwaukee, with more than 150 team members among 550 firm-wide in six national offices. As a healthcare principal, Cherie worked with some of Wisconsin's and the region's leading healthcare systems, including Ministry Healthcare, Aurora Healthcare, Affinity Health Systems, Veterans Affairs, Columbia-St. Mary's Hospital, and Froedtert Hospital.

"Cherie set an example that has inspired me as long as I've known her," said d'Andre Willis, AIA, associate vice president with HGA in Milwaukee. "She recruited me to join HGA in 1998. Seeing her position as a leader in a firm of HGA's size and distinction was a major influence on my choice to join the firm. Her example of service to our profession, partnership with her clients and mentoring of the next generation has inspired me daily. I hope that I'll be able to look back some day and see in my work even a small part of the accomplishment that I see in Cherie's career."

Outside HGA, Cherie contributed greatly to the advancement of the architecture profession. She was an active member of the American Institute of Architects-Milwaukee Chapter. She served as chapter President in 2000, building new AIA initiatives in Milwaukee and strengthening member participation.Cherie also was a member of the Executive Committee of AIA Wisconsin, serving as President in 2005. She expanded services for members while maintaining the organization's strong financial foundation. She was additionally a voice for young architects, promoting professional mentorship programs, the Intern Development Program, and the Architect Registration Examination.

"Cherie taught me that being a mentor is one of life's greatest honors," said Cynthia Mueller, AIA, LEED AP, M+W Zander US Operations, Chicago. "She mentored me-sometimes whether I wanted her to or not-during my time at HGA and I carry those lessons with me to this day. I find that I am similarly compelled to guide the young female architects in my life-whether they want me to or not-giving praise and criticism as needed but always with kindness. I think Cherie and I bonded because she saw that I had what it took to be an architect before I did and that I would use the advice she was giving me."

Cherie received various awards and recognitions for her professional contributions. She won a Distinguished Alumni Award from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2003.In 2007, Cherie received the AIA Wisconsin "Golden Award," the society's highest honor for being a "role model whose contributions have not only raised the profession as a whole, but also are a constant source of inspiration to other architects across the state," according to AIA Wisconsin.

Cherie also accepted the Hammel Award in 2009, HGA's highest recognition given annually to an employee who supports the growth and well-being of the firm and fellow staff members. "As a supportive and honest leader, Cherie has made a huge difference in the Milwaukee office as well as the profession," noted Steve Fiskum, AIA, chief operating officer, in bestowing the award. "She is an inspiration for the women of HGA and is an unsung hero when it comes to mentoring staff."

In addition to the profession, Cherie was involved in leadership roles for a number of local community-focused organizations, including Tempo International, the Junior League of Milwaukee, and the Girl Scouts of America. She enjoyed sewing, making beaded jewelry, cooking, and reading mystery novels, and had an aviation pilot's license.

Cherie's dedication and passion continue to inspire her HGA colleagues.

"Cherie was a wonderful mother, architect, and friend to many," said Kurt Spiering, AIA, vice president and principal with HGA in Milwaukee. "She took great pride in all that she helped create here at HGA. We all owe her a share of gratitude for her tireless and selfless efforts as a principal and office director."

Cherie is survived by her loving husband Art Chadek, also an architect; daughter Lea and son Dana, in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin; sister Lynn of St. Petersburg, Florida; and nephew Michael of Tallahassee, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Cherie to the cancer research and prevention organization of your choice, the Girl Scouts of America or to the Star Scholarship Fund at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning.

A memorial service will be held at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 1615 Wauwatosa Avenue, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin 53213, on August 26, at 6:45 PM.

DIVERSE MIX OF PROJECTS

(June 3, 2009) Seven building projects have been recognized for excellence in architectural design by the 2009 Design Awards program of AIA Wisconsin, the state society of The American Institute of Architects (AIA).

This year's award-winning architecture reflects a diverse mix of projects, including a sushi restaurant, a condo development welcome center, private residences, a hospital, a transportation center and a national headquarters building. These projects are honored for their creative, contemporary, innovative and environmentally sensitive design solutions. The common thread among all seven projects is that they were designed by architect members of AIA Wisconsin. A jury of nationally distinguished architects from outside Wisconsin selected the award-winning projects. Members of the 2009 Design Awards jury were Kathy Achelpohl, AIA Kansas City, Mo.; Stephen Knowles, AIA Minneapolis; and Kevin Rice, AIA, New York.

“The projects selected for recognition add to the voice of Wisconsin,” according to this year's awards jury. “Wisconsin architects should be proud that these are rising to the surface.”

AIAM NEWS: OCTOBER 2009

E-mail Print PDF

Hopefully everyone has enjoyed the last few weeks of "Summer in September". As we move into the fall season AIA Milwaukee has a great variety of events and programs taking place, from a construction tour of Project Honor designed by Foster & Partners to a unique lecture on the history of the "Mansions of Grand Ave". Keep reading below to find out more information.

UNBUILT Architecture: MKE @ The Eisner

It was great to see so many members at the Unbuilt Architecture:MKE exhibit opening at the Eisner two weeks ago. If you didn't get a chance yet to check out the exhibit, it will be running until March 2010 and will be open and FREE on the Fall Gallery Night (October 16, 5:00pm - 8:00pm) and Winter Gallery Night (January 15).

Get Involved. VOLUNTEER.

One of the best ways to truly stay connected and give back to the architecture community is to volunteer with AIA Milwaukee. We've got some really great opportunities available from running for an elected position on the Board of Directors this November, helping organize a tour or educational program to making a piece of art for FEED YOUR SOUL. In the coming weeks make sure to keep your eyes out for these awesome opportunities and more. Information will be updated this next week under the Opportunities section on the AIA Milwaukee Web site.
