2008 National COTE design award to TKWA 22 [apr] 2008
Congratulations to The Kubala Washatko Architects of Cederburg, Wisconsin (TKWA) for its National award winning design of the Aldo Leopold Legacy Center in Baraboo, Wisconsin.
“Through its demonstrable energy conservation and reduced heating, cooling and operating costs, this is an excellent example of how a building can achieve carbon neutrality.” stated juror and AIA national First Vice President, Marvin Malecha, FAIA
“Completed in spring, 2007, the 12,000sf building includes office and meeting spaces, interpretive hall, archive and workshop. The Center was envisioned as a small complex of structures organized around a central courtyard. This design provides flexibility in managing energy use based on program requirements, creates outdoor spaces for work and gathering, and reduces the scale of the buildings on site. The Aldo Leopold Legacy Center is the first building recognized by LEED as carbon-neutral in operation”. TKWA co-founders Allen Washatko and Tom Kubala will be traveling to the AIA national convention in Boston to receive their award. An AIAM Opening Doors program at TKWA in Cedarburg is planned for Fall 2008.

A New Way to Build Up in Downtown Milwaukee 13 [apr] 2008
Recap of Staybridge Suites + Residences on Water Construction Tour – R. Morrison
The weather didn’t completely cooperate, but the 30 hearty guests that fought through the pouring rain and gusting winter winds enjoyed a look at the future of precast construction. Roger Becker, PE, Vice President of Spancrete and several other representatives from Spancrete and Economou Partners lead the tour, demonstrating new precast construction techniques, and answering many questions from the contractors, students, and architects in attendance.
The project features a new type of precast truss which spans 2-stories in height, 75’ in clear span length, and installed at 30’ on center. Theses trusses are set on columns at every other floor. At the initial floor the floor deck above is supported by the bottom chord of the truss and the next floor deck is set on top of the truss. By doing so, the initial floor has no interior columns throughout and allows maximum flexibility in space planning design.
The upper level has the trusses spanning in one direction, but no other obstructions, like columns, in the space. The trusses currently limited to highway transportation on trucking limitations, which accommodates 14’ tall trusses at 75’ length. The project also features a variety of precast exterior panels, floor deck, beams, columns, and structural tee-systems.
