5th Annual AIA MILWAUKEE BLOOD DRIVE - "ARCHITECTS ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES"

This past month on June 15th, 52 architects, design professionals, allied professionals, Milwaukee Public Market vendors and guests, high school students, and tourists donated 47 pints of blood to the Blood Center of Wisconsin. That's enough to impact the lives of up to 141 local hospital patients!

The winner of this year's competition for Highest Participation is Schroeder & Holt Architects , as they hold on to their title from last year. Your firm outpaced the competition for the second straight year with the highest participation (four people equaling 36% of their staff) with 4 pints collected. Uihlein-Wilson Architects came in 2nd with 15% of their firm donating while Kahler Slater and Plunkett Raysich Architects tied for third with 10%. Of the participating firms Kahler Slater donated 8 pints, Plunkett Raysich Architects and Milwaukee Public Market each donated 6 pints while Eppstein Uhen Architects donated 5 pints.

Thanks again for everyone who participated, either directly or helping us get the word out. Please consider donating again next year, approximately the second week in June, 2011. Stay on track by donating every two months and this drive will fit your schedule.

Special Thanks to Ellen, Dave, Tim and Paul of the Milwaukee Public Market for being gracious and enthusiastic hosts for our event. We couldn't have done it without you.

RECAP - UNSEEN ARCHITECTURE: MKE

E-mail Print PDF

(May 6, 2010) The Milwaukee chapter of the American Institute of Architects sponsored and developed an architectural exhibit at the Eisner Museum of Advertising & Design in Milwaukee that was open to the public from September of 2009 through March of 2010. Collaborating with The Eisner’s Executive director, Cori Coffman, her staff and numerous AIA Milwaukee volunteers, we assembled a professional museum exhibit on a very limited budget. This exhibit was so successful that we were invited to bring the exhibit to the national headquarters of the American Institute of Architects in Washington D. C. for a showing this coming July and August.

“Unseen Architecture: MKE” showcased creative and inspirational architectural thinking highlighting 18 local architecture firms. Like many of the creative fields, the public only sees a small portion of what was conceived. This holds true in architecture as well. For this reason, The Eisner and AIA-Milwaukee have joined together to explore the concept drawings and models and applaud the efforts of what could be.

“We are excited to bring in this amazing array of creative thinking,” said Cori Coffman, executive director of The Eisner. “Design comes in many forms, architecture being one of them,” “If these concept drawings were built, Milwaukee would have a far more progressive looking skyline."

With architecture, a building becomes a part of our urban landscape. We work and live within the walls of this creative thinking. The buildings become part of our history and our culture. They are photographed in time and written about in books. With this exhibit, we celebrate the beginning steps of the process from sketches on a bar napkin, to countless pages of renderings, to 3D cad drawings and beautifully produced models.

In architecture, it’s about the form and function of the building. How the building will stand the test of time and how it will impact a city’s landscape. Many decisions go into this process and the architect is responsible for the end result. As the public we critique theses buildings every day. Through the exhibit, the public will gain a better understanding of what it takes to produce and conceive these buildings.

The exhibit produced excellent results with record audiences, over 10,000 visitors in 6 months. Numerous events including professional meetings and multi-media presentations took place and area students were invited for free visits. Particular focus was made to the educational quality of the exhibit to promote the science and art of planning and building and increase the public’s architectural design awareness. We expect to provide similar results in Washington D.C.
