President's Message

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire”  -  William Butler Yeats

Architects, students, interns, affiliates and guests of AIA Milwaukee have had many occasions to join together - to engage in debate, be educated, to light our fires.   We graciously thank those firms who have presented insights into our profession and opened their companies’ doors.

Recent Events

Such recent events provoking thought include the AIAS National FORUM, where over 850 students and professionals from around the country collaborated in Milwaukee to present, learn and deliberate the architectural profession. Barrientos Design presented, “Reflecting Indigenous Culture in Contemporary Culture”.  IMI masonry expert, Pat Conway presented, “build tight, ventilate right” at Miller Park’s Friday’s as part of the Building Science Series and a construction tour of the Alterra Coffee headquarters was led by Kubala Washatko Architects.  Uihlein-Wilson’s design of the Eckhart Grohmann Museum at MSOE was the featured “Opening Doors” event for May, including a tour by philanthropist Grohmann.

What’s Next?

Learn about the UWM School of Architecture's  Solar Decathlon project at presentation  June 12 at the Urban Ecology Center.  For those looking for practice / administrative programs we will continue to offer webinars, sponsored by AIA national, the next one is June 17th at PRA.   Interns, we have developed ARE Study Sessions. Fun seekers, join a lively discussion with food and drink at our monthly “Opening Doors” events, or the Milwaukee River Cruise Aug. 21st. Affiliates - network with us at all the events.  Go to our AIA Milwaukee calendar for details and a complete listing of events.

Advocacy and Diversity

Later this year AIA Milwaukee will focus on transportation funding, potentially providing a political forum with our local official and members of the planning and design community and debate with the economic development group, “Milwaukee 7”. AIAM continues to sponsor the Milwaukee Public Schools’ new charter high school, SUPAR with a donation of $500 and used architectural books and supplies.  September 18th will be the Diane Trevarrow Evans Memorial Lecture focusing on the cultural diversity of our profession.  On June 3rd architects gathered at the Milwaukee Public Market to donate blood. Go to the Community tab to learn more or get involved.

Opportunities

Opportunities to get involved will be broadcasted monthly and posted to the website, including community volunteer positions and AIA Milwaukee committee openings. Currently we have the need for a Co-chair for the Design/Theory committee (with Gil Snyder), an assistant web site master, and an event update assistant.

Please take a minute to navigate our NEW website which:

  • Broadcasts upcoming programs and events related to the built environment. (Calendar and Programs)
  • Reviews recent programs, provide lessons learned. (News)
  • Features links recommended by our readers. (Resources)
  • Showcases our members’ work (throughout website).
  • Connects our profession to the southeast Wisconsin community via committees and advocacy initiatives  (Committees)
  • Allows us to be transparent and an accountable member organization, posting AIA Milwaukee minutes and officer contact.  (About)

As always, your ideas and criticism are welcome

With an intent to inspire curiosity, and ignite a spark of enthusiasm to strengthen our profession of architecture, we welcome you  to AIA Milwaukee’s Web site. AIA Milwaukee is the voice of our profession and a resource to our members, our potential partners and clients.
